Without the right golf equipment, a golfer may have a hard time playing a good round of golf. This is because golf equipment comes in a variety of sizes, weights and shapes, and each individual piece of golf equipment works to help the player maximize his potential in the game. Golf equipment encompasses a variety of items, including golf balls, clubs and shafts, carrying bags, markers for golf balls, gloves to protect the golfer’s hands during play, towels to wipe up perspiration, special shoes to grip the soft, uneven terrain often found outdoors, tees and other accessories to make golfing easier and more convenient.

Let’s start with the golf ball, an essential piece of golf equipment. The golf ball has a minimum diameter of 42.67mm, and a maximum weight of 45.93g. Golf balls were originally made out of leather and feathers, but modern designs incorporate the use of synthetic materials put together in two, three or four layer designs. Golf balls can have soft covers (which translate into higher spin, more “feel” and easier stopping) or hard covers (longer distances during play). Today’s golf balls may also use RFID technology, which helps the golfer to pinpoint the exact location of a lost ball.

Golf clubs are categorized as woods, irons and putters. There are also wedges, but these are used for very short shots. Woods are used for long shots done from a tee or fairway. Putters are often used on the green, and in many mini-golf courses.

Shafts are used between the grip and the club head of golf clubs. The shaft has a profile that is circular in shape, and it is thicker at the grip end than at the club head end. Most of today’s shafts are made of tempered steel or graphite, though some specialty shafts may use titanium or aluminum, or follow yesterday’s design of hickory wood. Shafts can also be tapered, either in steps or in one smooth fashion. Golf equipment can be carted around from course to course with the use of golf bags. Golf bags can be made of nylon and/or leather, and are designed in a cylinder shape wrapped around a plastic frame, so that golf clubs can be securely transported in them.

In addition, golf bags have many different pockets to organize and transport other types of golf equipment and supplies. Golf bags can come with large straps for over the shoulder carrying, or they can be pulled or pushed on a two-wheel pull cart or golf cart during play.

Nike OZ #4 Putter

I tested the Nike OZ #4 putter a few days ago and really liked it. The soft green insert and larger grip enhance putting confidence. This also helps keep the ball in contact longer with the putter face and as we’ve discussed in the past helps promote a truer roll of the golf ball. I’m more of a blade putter kind of guy, but this mallet style putter feels great through impact. Since all of the Nike OZ mallet putters are face balanced it helps keep the putter square when striking the ball.

Got the Putter Yips?

A friend of mine asked me the other day if I had any tips or tricks that could help fix the yips he was having on the putting greens. I’m obviously not an instructor, so I gave him the best advice I could. The topic did get me thinking about it though.

I went to GolfChannel.com and started looking around for a possible solution and came across a great video by Brad Brewer. I’m sure many of you are familar with Brad, he operates a Golf Acadmey in Orlando Florida. Anyway, checkout this video from Brad that could help solve your putting yips.

Putter Fitting – How important is it?

Proper putter fitting can make all the difference in your putting performance. There are many things that go into determining which putter fits you the best, things like lie angle, putter length and putter face loft. Their is an excellent video by Eric Hogge, the Head Golf Professional for the Center for Golf Learning and Performance and the Director of Club Fitting for PGA of America, describing these three elements of putter fitting.

Proper fitting is important, so much so that you can’t buy a new Coutour model putter without getting fitted for one first. They have devised a way scientific way to gauge your proper fit. They call it the Tri-Fit Measurement System. I’m not sure putter fitting needs to be quite this exact, but then again I was never very good at math.

For Better Feel, Add Inserts

Half of putting is knowing you can make any put, so when your lacking confidence even the “gimmie’s” feel more difficult. To gain feel and confidence with you’re putting try different putter inserts.

Inserts are located on the face of the putter and are designed to give you greater control of speed, distance and promotes a true roll of the ball. Because inserts are typically made of a lighter substance then the putter head, the ball stays on the face longer increasing stability through impact.

Try to find the type of putter that not only fits your stroke, but one that feels good as well. Confidence can take you a long way on the greens, so go out and find a putter that feels like a million dollars! Oh, by the way, all four majors we’re won with putters using insert technology.

Putting Perspectives with Dave Pelz

In order for us to be able to know whether or not we’re choosing the correct putter we should know how to put correctly. Dave Pelz is one of the best instructors in the country and one that I read and listen to as much as possible. Here is a tip from Dave to help lower the amount of three puts in your round. I’ll be adding different tips from lots of instructors from time to time.

Blade or Mallet?

OK, so let’s dive into the different putter heads that we’ll see in golf shops across America. The most common two heads are blade and mallet. Each head has its different physical characteristics as well as how the golf ball reacts of the face of the putter.

Blade: Blade putters are generally smaller and thinner than the other designs. Blade putters have a consistent thickness and are evenly weighted. If you’ve ever been to Put-Put with the kids you’ve used a blade putter. Most golfers say they have a better feel with blade putters and they are certainly lighter.

Mallet: Mallet putters are larger then blade putters and come in a variety of shapes. The common trait is that most of the weight is in the rear of the head which in turn leads to greater speed through the ball. Mallet putters have a natural tendency to stay square through the golf ball when putting.

Which is best? Everyone is a little different, so get out there and test them for yourself.
