I am getting this golf set, anything else I should get? (Beginner!)?

Crizzle Gizzle asked:

I have NEVER played golf before, and know that I really want to give it a shot mainly because my friends do it, it seems like a very relaxing sport (I have a lot of patience), and I am an officer in the military and know that one day an Admiral will invite me to play with him.

I was originally going to get a Prince Golf set from Costco, but people on here convinced me not to. I was told by some people to get this set from Sports Authority, a Top Flite XL 15 set:

My questions are these:
1) Is this a good set?
2) Is there anything else I should get along with this set? A standard wood, iron, putter, something of a higher quality to be my usual club?
3) Anything else to add to it all?

Thanks in advance, and I will give best answer props!

I’m sure there are other better sets out there for near that price. Try older models of nice, forgiving irons.
You should get a driver and putter. Those two are absolutely necessary. Things you can get as you improve are the 3 wood and wedges (sand wedge/lob wedge).
Don’t play with good balls (buy really bad balls that are really cheap to buy in bundles) until you start hitting in the 80’s (or 90’s if you can afford them).

get a used set at a garage sale or thrift store or pawn shop. spend a month at a driving range.

LOL…. I was an enlisted man in the military. At my first duty station (Whiting Field NAS) my Squadron XO found out that I had played 4 years of Varsity golf in high school and a couple years in college…. he picked me up early every Wed & Fri to go play against the other officers in the other squadrons. Needless to say we pissed off a bunch of brass…. easy to do when your 20, an E2 and have a 4 handicap.
As for clubs….. you can do much better than TF-XL’s. I’d be willing to help you get the right clubs. I bet we could find you a nice used set of Titleist DCI/OS or Taylormade Burner O/S irons for $100 or less (maybe some Ping-Eye2’s for a tad more). And maybe a Callaway or Taylormade Driver and 3-wood for $75-100. As for putters….. it’s always best to go to the golf shop and putt with them. You’ll know when you have the right one.
Seriously tho, if you want help picking out some clubs get ahold of me at:

go to a good golf store. they should have used clubs. they should also have indoor hitting facility, if they don’t you are not at a good golf store.
try out all clubs in your price range. even though you’ve never golfed i’ll bet you’ll know when you’ve got a club with a nice feel to it. do not overspend and do not get caught up in brand names, i play a square headed xgen driver i got from walmart clearance for $25. i hit it straighter and longer than my callaway x460. buy whatever balls are on sale until you find one you prefer. you already have the most important part, and that is patience.
good luck and don’t take the game too seriously. it’s just a game.

There is some good advice here. Don;t go for top flite as although they are a reputable name I would only buy their balls. And even that was before I started to realise the difference in balls.

Regarding clubs, however, go to a good golf store. American Golf Discount have a good range of 2nd hand clubs and you can pick up some right bargains, particularly at the beginning of each month when people are trading in/upgrading.

Mizuno, Titleist and Callaway are good makes of clubs which you can’t really go wrong with. Also try Golfbidder and ebay but beware on ebay as if it’s seems to good to be true, it probably is (fake)! Good luck and enjoy your new golfing lifestyle!!!!
